Rhyming Verse Poem

Rhyming Verse:

New Zealand,Aoteroa,

There used to be a bird called the moa.

L&P, kiwifruit and the buzzy bee,

Also famous for the Pohutakawa, a tree.

Green meadows and the light blue sky,

The people here are not at all shy,

They are friendly and caring too,

They will look after and help you.

Bring your family, bring your friends,

Some of the parties never end.

Even when you're running late,

Don't forget to say kia ora mate

A land of total paradice,

Where all the scenery is really nice.

North, South wherever you may be,

New Zealand is a great place to see

So fun in the sun

My Speech on Xtranormal

My Narrative

The Three Little Piglets

Once upon a time there lived Cinderella, the three little piglets and the Gruffalo. They were well known all over Fairytale World because Cinderella always won the Miss Fairytale World beauty contest. Cinderella was married to the surprisingly friendly Gruffalo. They were all well and happy with their three little piglets, which they adopted. They all had their own private chefs and pools, which had coloured lights and fountains. They each had two bedrooms and their own kitchen and private ensuite. The three little piglets starred as main characters in the hit T.V show Pigs in Hollywood. Cinderella wanted to see the little piglets because they had very hectic shooting schedule so the T.V show was shot at their house formally known as the “Pink House.” The piglets were Tom, Pumpkin and Harold. Tom was the head piglet of them all, Harold was the smart one and often got teased for being so brainy. The last little piglet was called Plumpkin who was plump and cute, he also liked eating hamburgers.

The three little piglets had stopped filming for the month and were about to start filming for the new season of Pigs in Hollywood and were always out promoting the show. Over the hedge there was something the piglets knew nothing about, the Green House was being built and it was going to be even bigger than the Pink House. The piglettes were moving in! Over the hedge builders and designers were working nine to five because Cinderella had complained that in the morning and at night the piglets needed their sleep.

The day that the piglettes were due to move in the piglets were asleep till well after midday and when they finally awoke their mother was bustling about the main kitchen complaining about all the noise coming from over the hedge. The piglettes closely examined their rooms that all had three beds of which one would rotate into a desk with a brand new apple computer on. Nikki was so pleased because she got a brand new wardrobe worth five million dollars. Millie was ecstatic because she got a cupboard full of milky way chocolate bars. Penny was excited because she got a rotating bookshelf with five hundred of the best books on.

Cinderella was on the phone to the piglets manager who suggested they should come for a photo shoot to promote the new season of Pigs in Hollywood. When they got through the crowd at the studio of fans that didn’t even take any notice of the piglets they went into the photo shoot room. They posed in front of a tree and wore bling bling. Tom then complained after he saw a red convertible in the corner of the studio. Tom was very curious but his manager said firmly that it was for Madonna later on in the day.

After the piglets had their photo shoot the went out into the foyer and heard lots of screaming and thirty bodyguards barged in with someone in the middle of them. All the piglets were interested in what was going on. They all thought they were Madonna’s fans. When they looked inside the studio they saw three piglets having a photo shoot in front of the car. They then were escorted quickly to the recording booth and from what the piglets could hear they sung like complete angels all the boys were gobsmacked. Tom was staring at Nikki with his big brown eyes until............. Harold and Pumpkin snapped him out of it and said that they were the competition. All the piglets left the building and went to tattle to their Mummy.

When they got home they told their mother who was absolutely furious. She marched right in to the piglets manager and instantly fired him. Then she suggested a showdown at the city hall to determine which sets of pigs were best. The piglettes all agreed to this and asked what they would have to perform. Cinderella replied rather arrogantly that they were to perform one song under five minutes in length, and this would be the same for the piglets.

They all arrived at precisely quarter to two so they had time to warm up. The creators of Pigs in Hollywood said whoever won would star in the upcoming season of the show. The judges were the audience, 300 ten to twenty year olds. The piglets were first up and the sounded wonderful. It was then the piglettes turn who outstanded the audience. The results were in.... The piglettes had beaten the piglets by thirty-two votes and were now officially T.V stars.

After the competition they all moved in together in the newly built orange house, which was, you guessed it bigger and better than the pink house and green house, but that’s another story. They all lived happily ever after. The End

Channel 50 Summary

I am in Channel 50 at our school Somerville Intermediate. This is the extension class for the school and I go to one of the two year 7 sessions twice a week. We do lots of different things including thinking skills activities. At Channel 50 I specifically enjoy the philosophical discussions this is where we discuss as a class which option we would choose, Like for instance Wealth or Friends. We think about different meanings for the word so wealth doesn’t always mean to be rich or have lots of money. We then look at what the type of wealth would mean and then if you could have both and how you would use them. Also possible scenarios, which could happen with one of the options. At the moment we are looking at what the world would look like in 2050, technology wise and you as a person then. We also are searching an eminent person who we are similar to or admire. We have to find out information about them and answer questions about them such as what was your greatest accomplishment. I have picked Martin Luther King Jr. because I feel he was a great leader who made lots of good changes in the world, he also changed things he didn’t agree to in a peaceful way. This is all part of our huge project due at the start of November. So far I have written a future article set in 2050, I have decided who my eminent person is, I have brainstormed people past, present and future who have made a positive impact on the world. Also I have started researching my person so I can answer questions on them. Next week we are starting a bio-riddle on our eminent person. Channel 50 is really exciting to me and I will write a piece after I have finished the project. Overall, I really enjoy Channel 50 and look forward to what else it has to offer.

Hair Colours

Yes right now you are probably thinking what on earth but honestly it is something going on in todays society and it is affecting many people.Think of offending people about their hair colour as hairisim. I mean blondes get given a hard time when actually most blondes are very intelligent, like take my friend Ally for example she is in fact very intelligent and actually got into the year seven speech finals also only blondes from my syndicate went through to the prepared speeches for the year seven finals. Lots of people probably don’t know what colour my hair actually is well neither do I to be honest. My parents call it Strawberry Blonde along with the rest of my family. Whether people at school call it the new ginger-Ginga. It’s only this year that my hair colour has been brought up, I guess it all started with the radio station holding the hug a ginga day. The way I see it a radio station ran a hug a ginga day, no big deal. People then got angry at them because of the unfairness to gingas (I mean its only hugs) there was even an argument on NZ television. My opinion is hug a ginga day was fine all that really happens is people give you hugs, which is actually kind of cool, sort of like free hugs for the whole day. It may not of been like this for other people I guess, but for me I really didn’t mind. I guess it does get annoying when people say Ginga Ninga or Strawberry Shortcake behind your back, then they say I wasn’t talking to you but you know they were as you are the only Ginga in the class. Don’t get me wrong other hair colours get hairisim but brunettes or people with black hair don’t really. So back to the question, am I a ginga or strawberry blonde?? Cast your vote and why in the comments section below.

Cookie Sale Review

Cookie Sale Review

Today we held our cookie sale which was quite successful. We doubted we would be able to sell many as another class was raising money for the S.P.C.A cupcake day. To make matters worse they were in the class next to where we were selling our cookies. Our prices were cheap enough but perhaps too cheap. We sold one for 50c and six for $2. The packs didn’t really give us much profit as they were getting two free cookies. We sold them at morning tea and lunch. At morning tea the cookies did extremely well and would have sold out if we didn’t bring them inside to save some for lunchtime. At lunch the cookies sold out after around five minutes. We raised $70 which we thought was great. It was a brilliant way to donate money for those in need and we had a great time making them. We are now thinking of of running another cookie sale but might not have the six packs for $2 instead it would be the normal price of $3 for a bag of six. Everyone said they loved our cookies and it is great it’s going to a good charity. Overall, they were so fun to make and we spent around three hours making and wrapping cookies. It would be great to do this again with no competition and we all enjoyed it. All in all it was well worth doing!!! We have had many requests for another cookie sale, and some people even said they were the best cookies ever. One of our customers even brought over twelve cookies!!! We are donating our $70 to the Pakistan Emergency Appeal

A Big Thank You To:
Tabetha’s Mum- for giving us the use of her kitchen, helping us with the oven and supplying ingredients.
Mr Crowhurst- For approving this 10% project and helping us put it all together.
My Parents- For suppling ingredients and cellophane and ribbon for the six packs.
Mrs Bornman- For accepting our request to sell the cookies at school.
Our Customers- For helping to make this cookie sale a big success.
Kimberley- For coming up with the idea and helping bake and sell the cookies.
Tabby- For baking and selling the cookies as well as providing humour after spilling the vanilla essence EVERYWHERE!!!!!
Tear Fund - for making it easy to contribute to causes throughout the world such as the cause we have chosen, The Pakistan Emergency Appeal.

Cookie Sale

Hi Everyone
In our class we do something called 10% time. This is where one block a week we work on a project we chose ourselves. This could be anything as long as our teacher, Mr Crowhurst has approved. We have chosen to do a cookie sale supporting TEAR fund NZ. The money will go to the Pakistan Emergency Appeal. This will help people in Pakistan who have been affected by the recent floods. We are planning on baking just over 200 cookies before Monday the 30th of August. This will be a big challenge but we hope with your support we can help others in need. The cookies will be sold outside our class, Room 28. The cookies will be sold at morning tea and lunchtime for 50c for one cookie and $2 for six cookies. All profits go to the Pakistan Emergency Appeal.Help us help them, together we can make it right.
Thank you, Greer and Kim.

The Electric Car

Who Killed The Electric Car?
W.A.L.T-Describe how advancements in technology occur to meet a need or solve a problem.

What problems are solved by the electric car?
There were many problems that were solved by the electric car. For starters there was not as much pollution caused because there is no exhaust coming from the car into the atmosphere. It also helps society as lung cancer is partly caused by the exhaust. It also complied with the new law which enabled car companies to sell all cars with exhausts in California.

Who will benefit from the electric car?
Almost the whole world will benefit from the electric car. As it provides a healthier and better environment. Yip. You're spot on there. -Paul Crowhurst 6/17/10 9:49 PM It particually benefited the wealthier people as they were they only ones that could really afford them as they were not mass produced. They were also easier to use so then people who are unable to drive a normal car or have issues with the gears.... could use them.

What problems were caused by the electric car?
Firstly the battery wasn't very long lasting and strong. It was also out of the price range for middle class people and it's appearance was slightly too small to take on trips.

Review:
Who Killed the Electric Car is very detailed and contains lots of information. This movie is on a very inteteresting subject that has not really been put in the spotlight before. This movie is full of interviews with different people and opinions, this is a non-fiction movie.

The movie started with a funeral for the car, which was a rather odd place to start. It then looked at the consequences of cars that run on petrol and how it was affecting the environment. Then it showed the commercials for the car and some of the people that had them. They were actually suprisingly easy to use and it showed that night you plug it in and then unplug it in the morning and you're ready to go.

Most people didn't support the electric car idea as they didn't know anything about them and they were quite expensive. The government put electric cars down and then made a hydrogen car of their own. GM (General Motors) then stopped producing electric cars on their assembly line, other companies then followed. People who used electric cars then got their cars taken away to behind a building to later get crushed. The movie continues with various interviews and of course the ending.

This movie could have been really interesting but unfortunately it was not a very interesting movie as it had no humour and was not capturing the attention of the audience. It also covered lots of main points but did not keep you informed with what was happening all through the movie. Overall a movie that could have been put together slightly better but had good facts and information.
2.5/5 stars

Camp Motutapu Recount 2010

Here is my Camp Recount. Enjoy!!!

Camp Motutapu By Greer

2010- Syndicate D and Room 28

We arrived bright and early at 8.15 on Monday morning. Dad who was coming to camp with me helped me carry my bags in because they were really heavy and I think I was still half asleep. I handed in my biscuits and found my friends who were also really excited. It was the day we’d all been waiting for Syndicate D and Room 28 were going to Camp Motutapu.

We arrived at Rangitoto and walked across apparently the shortest bridge connecting two islands. Then we carried on with our two hour uphill walk. Tabetha and I talked the whole way and finally we arrived.

It was boiling hot when we stepped foot into the camp. We had our lunch, had a safety talk and got allocated to dorms. I was in a small room connected to dorm 4. In my small dorm were Tabby, Amber and Abby.

There were lots of activities at camp but these are some of my favourites. One of the activities I really enjoyed was Rock-climbing which was also combined with Abseiling. First we had to do abseiling which I was really nervous about. I crept up the Mole Hole, which is in the centre of all the rock-climbing walls. There were lots of ladders but finally I got up the top and hooked myself onto a rope so I couldn’t fall over the side.

It was then my turn, I hooked myself on then I slowly lowered myself. I spread my feet apart and I was in mid air abseiling like a professional. Something was yet to come though, I was about halfway down when my hair got stuck. It pulled and pulled until Logan who was our instructor fixed the ropes. Then I sped down the rest of the way and jumped off.

I then did rock-climbing which I am usually not very good at because I am slightly scared of heights. I went up “The Slab” quite easily despite a few struggles along the way. I then moved on to “Vertical One” I had attempted this before and got more than ¾ of the way, I was determined to beat this. So at Electives I climbed all the way to the top on Vertical One. I was so proud of myself I had really achieved my goal.

Another activity I really enjoyed was sailing. First we had to put our wetsuits and lifejackets on. Then we headed down to the beach for instructions on how to sail. It was a lot easier for me because I have sailed before at waterwise last year. I went in the optimist with Tabby and we managed, well sort of. We sailed round the buoys with no problems apart from the nosediving, which made almost a bath in the boat. Our turn was almost over so we started coming back into shore. Suddenly we tipped over into the freezing cold water which we later discovered had stingrays and sharks in.

Later on we found out what had gone wrong, we had turned the tiler but we didn’t change sides quick enough. After we had capsized I quickly swam to the back of the boat while Tabetha swam to the front and almost got hit by the boat. It was really nice weather that day so the swim back to the beach was somewhat refreshing. I then did sailing as one of my electives but the wind was really strong and the water was very choppy so it wasn’t quite as fun.

Probably the best activity was the flying kiwi, this is when you are connected to a rope by the harness and other people run down the hill holding the same rope you are attached to. The person with the harness on then proceeds to go flying 15 metres in the air. After you stop swinging you are dangling in mid air. The rope people walk backwards with the rope and slowly the person is lowered down. It was actually pretty scary and I screamed and screamed claiming the title of second loudest screamer of all people that did the flying kiwi on camp. To prove this the instructors wife could hear the scream all the way from inside their house.

Survivor was also great fun. I was on the yellow team, because the people in our team said it was easier to start on. We were in the competition against 28C who we all thought we could beat. Our first activity was the jigsaw puzzle followed by the cargo net, beams places on small logs, a swing over a muddy stream which you had to pull on a rope to make it work, up and over the tyres, over and under the hurdles, climb up to a big platform standing on someone’s back, then we had to use a hook to transfer a watering can to a different platform, criss cross through the tyres, we went down to the muddy pond to collect water so the gate would open, over the courses across the pond, over a big turning wheel, through the big tyres hanging from a frame and finally we were back home at our base.

In the end we won by about 10mins. The fist chance I had to really be close to the water was while collecting water from the pond so the gate could open. I slipped and fell straight into the dirty, muddy pond. So I helped my team in the water by passing the containers of water to them. I finally got out of the pond after my shoe got stuck when I did get out I had a mini bog on my sneaker.

After the competition ended most of us jumped into the pond and got covered in mud. We then walked down the equally as muddy creek which came up to our waists. The creek led to the duck poo pond. We were so muddy and dirty we actually washed off in the duck poo pond. We went up to Mr C and gave him a very muddy hug, he then had to go and change his shirt. Meanwhile we washed up with the fire hose. Later on we all had a shower with lots and lots of soap.

Camp Motutapu was really fun and exciting. It was a great experience and I would love to come back again any time. The activities were really full on and challenging, but so much fun. It was really cool having Electives because we got to do our favourite activities again. I also liked the camp concert because it was really entertaining. The only bad part about camp was that I got a really painful ear infection. The activities were so tiring that when I got home I had a really long bath and went to bed really, really early.

SPCA Report

We recently studied Causes in Our World. I choose the SPCA, here is my report.

The SPCA

You probably already know a lot about the SPCA. It was formed by English settlers to enforce animal acts and to stop animal cruelty in NZ.

They are amazingly well known throughout NZ, but you’d be surprised that they receive no government funding unless there is an emergency such as a drought. The SPCA attends to over 20,000 animals per year. Providing animals in their care with food, water and shelter these animals would have been otherwise homeless or mistreated animals.

As they are not government funded they run a few businesses inside the organisation. One of these is a cattery another is a pet supplies store and they run their own pet insurance company to. They also sell the rescued pets if they pass a test to see if they can behave in a family environment.

You may be wondering what you can do to help. You can do one of the easiest things, look after your pet so the SPCA does not have masses of pets come in their doors. You can also help by supporting HOPE a monthly pledge programme, putting pet food into the bins labeled at supermarkets. You could support cupcake day or maybe even consider adopting from the SPCA.

If you see someone being cruel to an animal call the SPCA and they will come and inspect the state of the animal or animals being badly treated.

My Report:Mobile Phones

Cellphone have evolved a lot during their time as they used to be known as two way radios. Therefore users could not dial phones phone numbers from their vehicle.

Cellphones come in different shapes sizes and colours and are connecting to a NZ (in our case) mobile phone company and on a mobile phone network.

In 1910 M.Ericson installed the first telephone in his car, but it still did not work inside his vehicle so he had to stop at a place where everyday telephones were accessible. Later on his telephone was released in Sweden in 19 56. The first person to have a mobile phone installed in his car, an Aston Martin was Prince Phillip in 1957. Two way radios were then also known as mobile rigs.

Nowdays phone are touch screen, small and almost able to operate anywhere. There has recently been much debate over cell towers outside homes as some people believe they cause or increase the chance of cancer. This is not scientifically proven yet though.

Cellphones are very helpful devices that keep people in touch near and far. What would you do without a cellphone?
